Radio Free Kaiju - Playtest
A downloadable game
Radio Free Kaiju is a post-apocalyptic hopepunk game of wonder and rebuilding amidst the ruins of post-apocalyptic splendor. It uses the Strange Frequency Framework used by games like Community Radio.
Groups of 3-5 players tell stories of hope and change via cycles of play which alternate between world-building radio broadcasts and Topside scenes focusing on a group of travelers taking a journey from one enclave to another.
THE SKY BELONGS TO THE MONSTERS.
Humanity bombarded the Earth with nuclear bombs in a last desperate attempt to end the kaiju incursions and battles destroying the world. We planned to destroy the beasts, then wait for the planet to heal so we could re-emerge. Operation: Kaiju Funeral, they called it.
We failed, and only we got buried.
The weaker kaiju met destruction, while the rest of the kaiju grew stronger. Humanity lives in scattered underground enclaves now. We survive but also grapple with the knowledge that the sky belongs to the monsters. Enclaves sometimes connect to each other through subterranean highways.
The new way the enclaves communicate is an old way - radio. Broadcasts allow enclaves to communicate their needs, desires, and events. Radio connects humans every way other than physically. When a community requires physical presence or goods, they reach towards their underground rebels, daredevils, risk-takers, and would-be messiahs; they contact their Topsiders, the only ones foolish enough to contemplate going outside. Topsiders bring many things: medicine, news, trouble, information, dreams.
Since the earth still chokes on nuclear fallout and radiation, Topsiders must travel “kaiju roads” – the area within miles of a kaiju’s migratory path where the beast ambiently absorbs radiation. Topsiders who travel too close risk the kaiju’s wrath, but those travel too far from it risk being outpaced and losing access to the kaiju’s protective radius.
Topsiders face many dangers on the kaiju road, yet they remain hopeful in the face of those dangers. Successful completion of a journey means they’ll change the world in a meaningful way. They’ll also change themselves.
The Earth is more than chaos; even now, it teems with strange and almost alien beauty, which means wonder, awe, and hope must also exist.
They are waiting for you to find them.
